Welcome back, DERM Community.
This week’s issue is brought to you by Decode.me
For decades, dermatology was reactive: patients came in when something went wrong. Acne. Rashes. Moles. But Gen Z has rewritten the script. For them, skincare is identity, advocacy, and daily ritual.
This generation grew up on YouTube routines, TikTok tutorials, and ingredient lists read like nutrition labels.
They know the difference between niacinamide and azelaic acid before their first dermatology visit.
They question, research, and demand transparency.
And that cultural shift is reshaping the field in profound ways.
1. Dermatology is becoming preventative, not corrective
Gen Z starts retinoids and sunscreen before wrinkles appear. They’re not waiting for problems, they’re investing in prevention. This mindset is driving earlier, more proactive engagement with dermatologists.
2. Access is being democratized
Through teledermatology, AI scans, and social media education, Gen Z is reaching medical information faster than ever. The challenge is accuracy, distinguishing credible science from viral misinformation but the hunger for knowledge is real.
3. The patient–physician dynamic is changing
Today’s young patients arrive informed, sometimes skeptical, always curious. They expect collaboration, not authority. Dermatologists who thrive with Gen Z are the ones who meet that curiosity with empathy, not correction.
4. Beauty and health are no longer separate
For Gen Z, skincare is wellness: a reflection of mental health, sleep, diet, and stress. They’ve reframed the conversation from “perfect skin” to “healthy skin,” bringing dermatology closer to holistic care.

When skincare becomes empowerment instead of insecurity, the field of dermatology evolves.

👋🏻 See you next Thursday, DERM community!
Gen Z isn’t obsessed with skincare because they’re vain.
They’re obsessed because they understand that skin is health and health is power 😉
The practices they normalize today (prevention, transparency, collaboration) will define dermatology tomorrow. And the clinicians who lean into that shift won’t just attract younger patients. They’ll help build a field that’s more proactive, more informed, and more human than ever before.
This isn’t a trend cycle.
It’s the future of dermatology, already in motion.
Thank you for being here and we hope you learned a lot with us this week!
