You’ve heard it everywhere: “Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours.”
But let’s be honest: most of us aren’t sitting at our desks with a mirror and SPF bottle in hand.

So… do you really need to reapply every 2 hours indoors?

First, understand what we’re protecting against:

Sunlight has UVA, UVB, and visible light components:

  • UVB: causes sunburn, mostly blocked by glass.

  • UVA: penetrates glass and contributes to aging and pigmentation.

  • Visible light (especially blue light): can worsen melasma and hyperpigmentation in certain skin types.

So yes: some light exposure happens indoors, especially if you work near a window or under strong artificial light sources.

But here’s the nuance dermatologists emphasize

  • If you work away from windows and have standard indoor lighting, reapplication every 2 hours isn’t necessary.

  • If you sit near a window, drive frequently, or use devices for long hours, reapplication, or tinted mineral sunscreen containing iron oxides, can add protection against visible light and UVA.

  • Blue light from screens is weak compared to sunlight. However, people with melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or darker skin tones may still benefit from tinted SPF for the extra defense.

The dermatologist’s rule of thumb

Indoors all day, no direct sunlight?
Apply once in the morning, especially a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ with antioxidants.

Working near a window or stepping outside occasionally?
Reapply every 4–6 hours or use a powder or mist SPF for easy touch-ups.

Pro tip

Think of sunscreen as your daily insurance. Indoors, it’s less about frequency and more about consistency.
Applying every morning builds the habit (and baseline protection) that matters most.

The “every 2 hours” rule comes from outdoor UV exposure studies, not indoor settings.
Your reapplication schedule should reflect your actual environment, not just the label instructions.
