Welcome back, DERM Community.

We’ve all heard it or thought it.
“If it stings, it’s doing something.”

Somewhere along the line, skincare became synonymous with sensation.

That tingle, that mild burn, many interpret it as proof of potency. But to a dermatologist, it’s usually a red flag waving in slow motion.

Here’s what’s really happening when your moisturizer “burns a little.”

Healthy skin has an intact barrier, a finely tuned matrix of lipids, proteins, and corneocytes that keeps irritants out and hydration in.

When that barrier is disrupted (from over-exfoliation, harsh actives, or even cold weather), nerve endings sit closer to the surface.

Products that once felt soothing can now sting, not because they’re “working,” but because your barrier is inflamed and exposed.

Common culprits include low pH formulas, added fragrance, alcohol, or acids layered too aggressively. Even beneficial ingredients like niacinamide or Vitamin C can cause a burn when applied to already-compromised skin.

Here’s the irony: patients often push through discomfort thinking it’s part of the process, when in fact, it’s the signal to pause.

Dermatologists know that comfort is not the enemy of progress; it’s the indicator of health.

When your skin is resilient, calm, and balanced, it can tolerate and respond to actives more effectively.

If a product burns, don’t tough it out, troubleshoot:

  • Simplify your routine for a few days.

  • Switch to fragrance-free, barrier-repairing products (ceramides, glycerin, petrolatum, squalane).

  • Reintroduce actives slowly once sensitivity resolves.

  • And remember: glowing skin doesn’t have to hurt to heal.

Discomfort is not a badge of dedication, it’s feedback. Listen to it.

👋🏻 See you next Thursday, DERM community!

Healthy skin tends to feel calm, steady, and supported. That’s usually a sign things are moving in the right direction.

The more you tune into those signals, the easier it becomes to build a routine that actually works for you.

Until next week, trust what your skin is telling you and keep looking beneath the surface.
